Lorax Lesson Plan

Dr Seuss's story, "The Lorax" has a number of very obvious learning points and as such is a book which has a lot of potential for use in schools. However, it can be difficult and time consuming figuring out how exactly to use a book like this in an educational fashion. Luckily, the internet brings us a number of lesson plans that use the situations in The Lorax book and extrapolate upon them.

Free Green Lesson Plans; Dr Seuss, The Lorax

The above link will take you to a simple and logical lesson plan, developing ideas around the environmental aspect of the story. It starts with Lorax themes and then moves on to wider environmental issues.

A small collection of other lesson plans based upon The Lorax can be found here - Lorax Lesson Plans.

The Bippolo Seed & Other Stories

DR SEUSS RETURNS!

The Bippolo Seed and Other Stories is a collection of old Dr Seuss tales that were published in various magazines between 1948 and 1959 and is now published as the newest volume that fans will want to read.

The stories in the Bippolo Seed & Other Stories are;
  • The Bear, the Rabbit, and the Zinniga-Zanniga
  • Gustav the Goldfish
  • Tadd and Todd
  • Steak for Supper
  • The Bippolo Seed
  • The Strange Shirt Spot
  • The Great Henry McBride

As well as these seven stories there are Dr Seuss's wonderful illustrations; these have been enhanced in colour from the original prints and look great. The introduction to this new Dr Seuss book talks about the history of the stories and how they fit into the themes that Dr Seuss used in his more famous books.

Dr Seuss Movies

Many Dr Seuss books have been turned into animated cartoons, mostly to good effect; Green Eggs and Ham and The Lorax are two of my favourite cartoon adaptations of Dr Seuss books.

Dr Seuss fans will also be aware of the more recent movie adaptations of The Grinch, The Cat in the Hat and Horton Hears a Who, although many will cringe upon reading the names of those movies. For my part, I quite enjoy The Grinch, starring Jim Carrey, but the other two are horrible movies in my opinion.

It is with trepidation that many Dr Seuss fans will discover that a 3D animated version of The Lorax is due to be released in 2012.

The Lorax was made into a cartoon in 1972 (watch it here: Lorax Video) and, with input by Dr Seuss himself, it is a very good adaptation; can Hollywood do any better? I doubt it quite frankly. However, Dr Seuss's widow is involved in the production of the new Lorax movie, so she should enure some integrity and hopefully a movie far better than any of the other Dr Seuss based movies will result.

Dr Seuss fans can only wait and hope that another Seuss favourite is not spoilt.
